How To:

Animal Orders:

  1. Take the animal care and use online training: http://web.jhu.edu/animalcare/links.html. You will need a JHED ID to access the course. Print out the certificate of successful completion.

  2. Enroll in the Animal Exposure Surveillance Program (AESP) through Occupational Health Services. Go to 98 N. Broadway (Church Home Bldg.) 4th floor and tell them you would like to enroll in the AESP and get the enrollment certificate before you leave. You can also enroll by submitting the AESP questionnaire (http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/hse/forms/AESP/Index.html ) or by mail, but that will take longer.

  3. If you will be the Principal Investigator (P.I.) you will need to submit an animal protocol. Download an animal protocol form from our web site web.jhu.edu/animalcare/forms. Fill out the form and submit the form(s) to the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) office via fax (7-3747), e-mail (acuc@jhmi.edu), campus mail or in person (Room B122, Reed Hall, East Baltimore Campus).

  4. Once ACUC protocol number is obtained the order must be entered into SAP. Please see document for additional guidance on creating an ANPO a shopping cart order in SAP.

Helpful Tips:

All animals are purchased through HopkinsONE. The approved order must be received by Research Animal by Research Animal Resources (RAR) by TUESDAY  by TUESDAY AT 5PM to receive animals the following week. Orders with issues of any kind (lack of availability or space, incorrect billing information, etc.) will be scheduled for two weeks later. Investigators will be informed as soon as possible if delivery is delayed. For inquiries regarding animal orders, contact 410-955-3273.

All animal research must be approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). To assure this, investigators are asked to provide the approved ACUC protocol number any time they place animal orders.  The number of animals purchased will be debited from the approved number allotted in their protocol.  Once the approved number is reached, the protocol must be amended to request additional animals.

Occasionally an investigator wishes to receive animals from private sources or purchased through another institution.  These may only be received if the investigator notifies RAR in advance to obtain health status, determine if quarantine or testing is required, and to confirm housing availability.

Animals are delivered to Johns Hopkins at a central receiving dock.  After arriving, animals are checked for accuracy and condition and then sent out by RAR staff to the proper animal facility for housing.  Any animals arriving without an Animal Resources purchase order number will not be delivered.
