Employers hiring students must make a note of the FWS award. Students with FWS have an added advantage for the employer as the government covers a high percentage of wages. Essentially, the purpose of the Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is to stimulate and promote the part-time employment of eligible students who are in need of earnings to meet the cost of postsecondary education and to encourage participation in community service activities. The maximum award amount is dependent on the student’s eligibility and the availability of funds but will not exceed $5,000 for the year.

Benefits of FWS:

  • If you are hiring a student with FWS, you are only paying a fraction of their total salary, since the award covers the remaining.

  • The hiring process for a student with an FWS award remains the same.

  • Students can apply to all campus jobs.
